Writing history

Kazantzakis began the first draft in Vienna in the summer of 1922 and completed it in Berlin in early 1923. It was in this form that it appeared in Dimitris Glinos' periodical Anayennisi. In 1928 the author revised the text, adding a final chapter entitled "Silence". Further revisions followed up until 1944, when Kazantzakis wrote to Prevelakis saying that no further corrections would be made.
