The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum gladly accepted the invitation of the Mayor's Office of Culture of the Municipality of Heraklion and the Vice Mayor Mrs Rena Papadakis to participate in the successful series of talks "Small stories of the city". The Museum will be represented by Ms. Paraskevi Vassiliadis, Philologist, Deputy Director and Curator of the Kazantzakis Museum Collections.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday 27 November 2024 at 19:00 in the "Theotokopoulos" room of the Vikelaiia Municipal Library, where Ms. Vassiliadis will present the interesting topic "Between myth and history: searching for Nikos Kazantzakis in Heraklion".

A few words about the speech

Nikos Kazantzakis was born in Heraklion, Crete, where he lived his childhood, the sensitive years of his formative years. Heraklion was the source of inspiration for many of his works, and with his burial in the Martinego bastion of the imposing city walls, he will "haunt" Heraklion for centuries to come. The speaker will try to trace the presence of Nikos Kazantzakis in the city that gave birth to him and to shed light on his relationship with Heraklion through the investigation of original archival and bibliographical sources. Reference will be made to his origins, the house where he was born and unknown or misunderstood aspects of his relationship with his city will be presented, as well as shorter stories of the "Heraklian" writer through documents presented for the first time.

This event confirms once again the excellent relationship and the close cooperation between the Mayor's Office for Culture of the Municipality of Heraklion and the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, as this is the third invitation that the Mayor's Office has recently addressed to the Museum, following the very successful presentations of the Museum at the Roads Arts 2024 Festival with the educational walk "In the footsteps of Kazantzakis... Great Castle" and at the 1st Festival of the Walls with the artistic music and dance performance: "I am a creature ephemeral, weak, made of mud and dreams".
With its participation in these events, the Kazantzakis Museum is constantly trying to highlight unknown aspects of the life and work of Nikos Kazantzakis that are related to Heraklion and to promote to the public of his native city the important scientific work carried out at the Museum.
